With deepest sorrow, we announce that our beloved David Scott Barnett, 64, died on February 5, 2024.
David will be remembered for his unconditional love for his daughter, his family, his brothers and sisters in AA who became his extended family, and for his church family, whom he loved dearly.
Through no fault of his own, David became a victim of senseless gun violence in June 2022 and was left shot and paralyzed. Since then, he overcame so many emotional and physical medical obstacles. But, he focused on the future, and a new dream. He wasn’t going to let the tragedy stop him from riding his motorcycle again. He made his dream of riding a trike come true, and was able to go on cherished rides again with his daughter Roeann.
David was a hard worker his whole life. He took pride in his work, and enjoyed working for himself. He provided painting services, as well as wall covering and flooring. He could remodel anything, and did great work. He painted several houses for his family, too.
David’s life is hard to sum up. He always liked to have fun, but that fun could sometimes find him in trouble. He decided to give up all vices many years ago, and turned to Jesus instead. He would have celebrated his 19thsobriety birthday this year. David took on the challenge, before and after his spinal cord injury, to mentor to prisoners, in hopes that they too might find Jesus. Anyone who was lucky enough to know David, and understood his struggles, and helped him throughout his life, can now find peace, knowing that he is truly in a better place with God, and David is happy again! David believed in serving through kindness, and he will be remembered for that most.
David is survived by his mother and step-father, Linda and Larry Bowman; daughter Roeann Barnett; sister and brother-in-law Bridget and Jack Harwell; sister Michelle; half sisters Kym Radcliffe, Marcia Barnett, and Terri Barnett; nephew Jackson Harwell; nieces Brittany Barnett and Angela Caples, along with many, many cousins, and extended family and friends, too many to mention.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a memorial contribution in honor of David, to Craig Hospital www.craighospital.org.
On David’s behalf, the family wants to thank all of the doctors and nurses at Craig Spinal Cord Rehabilitation Hospital, and to David’s personal caregivers Amy and Aimee, his AA sponsor Bill, friends Fred, Wayne, Brad, all friends and pastor Jayme at Pikes Peak Bikers Church. Many thanks also to the Assisted Living home, where David made friends, and was spoiled by Jennifer and the staff.
At David’s request, he will be cremated with his remains scattered in the mountains at Sturgis at a later date.
A memorial service will be held February 25th 2024 at Pikes Peak Bikers Church, Colorado Springs.
