Fern Lucille Cox, 95, went to heaven on August 4, 2026. Fern was loved and cherished by her family and friends, and her departure leaves a huge hole in her family’s hearts.
Fern was born on October 19, 1930, in El Dorado, Ohio. She grew up in Ohio, Montana, and Indiana, and eventually settled in Torrance, California, as a teenager. Fern was adopted by Ralph and Maxine Shaffer, and she was the most devoted daughter ever. She loved and cared for her parents deeply and was always incredibly grateful for her family.
Fern was a hard worker who spent her younger years working in factories. When she had her son, Mark, she devoted her life primarily to being a mother and homemaker. She worked hard to make her home warm and comfortable, always practicing warm hospitality. She made delicious food for all who entered her home. “The kettle was always on,” as she would say, and she always had a tasty treat to go with the coffee. She loved to say that her home was the perfect stopping ground for folks passing through.
Mark often remarked that his mom was just like “Mrs. Cleaver.” She kept a beautiful, spotless home—one where you could truly “eat off the kitchen floors” because it was perfect all the time. Fern was an elegant lady who maintained a lovely appearance, even if she was just running out for groceries.
Fern cared deeply about people and frequently helped neighbors and friends with ordinary tasks. Whether she was shopping, cleaning, or chauffeuring people to appointments and errands, she devoted her life to meeting the needs of others well into her 80s.
Fern leaves behind her beloved son, Mark; her daughter-in-law, Brenda; her grandsons, Jonathan and Matthew; and many extended family members whom she cherished deeply.
