Hildegard Magdalena Malers (née Remmelt) was born on July 24, 1930 in Gross-Auheim in Hanau, Germany, to Heinrich Adolph Remmelt and Anna Maria Sekunda (Gundi) Remmelt. During World War II, she and her family faced hard times and sometimes at school she had to seek refuge in a bomb shelter. At nineteen, she graduated from her apprenticeship as a seamstress and married Latvian Aleksandrs (Alex) Malers on October 8, 1949. They immigrated to the United States in 1951 with their young firstborn, Ralf, traveling on a ship to New Orleans and settling in La Junta, CO, where they were sponsored by the Baptist Church. Hildegard (Hilda) and Alex became naturalized citizens of the US in 1957. Hilda learned English quickly, but never lost her pronounced German accent during the seventy years that she lived in La Junta. She worked as a seamstress for many years and created draperies and clothing for many residents of La Junta. She enjoyed family vacations to the mountains, traveling with her daughter Lilian, playing cards with her friends, reading, working on various puzzles, and being visited by friends and family. She died at the age of 91 on December 1st, 2021 in Colorado Springs after battling COVID-19 with health complications. She was preceded in death by her husband Alex in 2004. Her brother Willi (Germany), son Ralf with spouse Linda (Swink) and granddaughter Jennifer, daughter Lilian (Colorado Springs), and son Steve with spouse Kate (Fort Collins) and grandchildren Isaak, Hannah, Esther, and Silas will miss her. The family is planning a gathering in the future to remember “Oma”.
