Larry Neal Garrett, age 77, passed away peacefully at his home in Colorado Springs, Colorado, on April 17, 2025. Born on July 29, 1947, in Clarksville, Texas, Larry was the eldest of three children of Benjamin Alexander Garrett and Margaret Sue (Simmons) Garrett.

Larry’s early years were marked by several moves across small Texas towns for his father’s work before the family eventually settled in Farmers Branch, Texas. He was an active and curious child, participating in Boy Scouts, Little League, and church activities. He also delivered the Dallas Morning News on his bicycle before school each day, showing an early sense of responsibility and independence. As a boy and throughout his life, fishing and deer hunting trips with his large extended family were a special tradition for Larry.

A 1965 graduate of R.L. Turner High School, Larry excelled both in the classroom and on the field, playing varsity football, competing in track, and forging friendships that would last a lifetime. In summers he worked as a lifeguard and at Six Flags Over Texas. He went on to study accounting at Texas Tech University in Lubbock.

In 1969 Larry set off for San Francisco, where he became immersed in the city’s vibrant music scene. Through friends, he connected with blues and jazz musician Boz Scaggs and soon became his road manager. Larry hosted band rehearsals and meetings in his small apartment and toured with Scaggs’ band for seven years, including a stint in London to record the album Boz Scaggs & Band with renowned rock producer Glyn Johns. A highlight for Larry from this time was being quoted in a 1972 Rolling Stone article featuring Scaggs.

After returning briefly to Dallas in 1976, Larry made another move—this time to Honolulu, Hawaii—where he worked as an accountant for the ACLU. He returned to Dallas in 1980, and it was there he met his future wife Linda. They married in 1984 and built a life together in Coppell, Texas, raising two children, Madalyn and Austen.

Over the next 39 years, Larry worked as an accountant specializing in the heavy construction industry, holding positions at Jackson Concrete, Marock Inc., JRJ Paving, and RKM Utility Services. Known for his dedication, work ethic, and professionalism, Larry took great pride in his career.

Outside of work Larry enjoyed camping and fishing trips with his family, attending soccer games and dance recitals, family reunions at the lake, and watching Cowboys football. Larry also remained a passionate music lover and a natural storyteller—always ready with a memory, a laugh, or a well-timed joke.

In recent years Larry and Linda relocated to Colorado Springs to be near their daughter and her growing family. He will be remembered for his love for his family, his sharp wit, and the colorful stories of his adventures from growing up in Texas to his fascinating time in the music business and other memorable life experiences.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin and Margaret Garrett. Survivors include wife Linda Garrett of Colorado Springs; daughter Madalyn Guillory and husband Clay of Colorado Springs; son Austen Garrett and wife Katie of Argyle, TX; brother Jerry Garrett and wife Debbie of Greenville, GA; sister Sue Ann Chaffin and husband Tim of Northlake, TX; and his beloved grandchildren Sophia, Rosalia, and Theodore Garrett and Gillian Guillory. He also leaves behind many uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

A memorial service to honor Larry’s life will be held on Saturday, June 14, 2025, at 1:30 PM at Coppell Senior & Community Center at Grapevine Springs, 345 W. Bethel Rd., Coppell, TX 7019. Reception to follow.
