Mark “Wolf” Higgs Obituary

Mark Alan Higgs, who preferred to be called “Wolf,” was born October 26, 1957 to Duane Higgs and Joyce (Madsen) Higgs Spruth. He was baptized October 12, 1958 in Zweibrucken, Germany. He was confirmed at Faith Lutheran Church in Security on May 19, 1974. He graduated from Widefield High School in 1977.

Mark was a sports fanatic, serving as a trainer for several teams at Widefield High School, and remained an ardent fan his entire life. He was a fan of college and professional teams in whatever states he had family members, any school whose mascot was a wolf, and other obscure sports and teams without any of us understanding how he chose them. He was both an athlete and an assistant coach in Special Olympics.

As a child, Mark’s laugh was more of a cackle, and his family often joked that he sounded like he was about to lay an egg. As an adult, he delighted in catching people off guard by telling his own jokes, always cracking himself up in the process.

Mark worked or volunteered at a number of places including Pizza Hut, the Colorado Springs Police Department, Fountain Valley Senior Center, and spent many years in various programs through Goodwill. He greatly appreciated all those who worked at the Security Fire Department and the El Paso County Sheriff’s office.

He is survived by his sister, Julie (Keith Staley) Higgs of Dubuque, Iowa. When his mother remarried, he gained additional family members and is also survived by his father Erwin “Ob” Spruth of Colorado Springs; sister Amalia (Eric) Spruth-Janssen of rural Humboldt, Nebraska, brother Erwin Spruth of Colorado Springs, nephews Micah (Diane) Sherwin of Minneapolis and Isaiah Spruth-Janssen of Omaha, Nebraska, and niece Kyria Spruth-Janssen of Omaha.

Mark died Sunday, September 15, 2024. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Keith Higgs and his stepbrother Michael Spruth.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 5, 2024, at 1:00 pm, at Faith Lutheran Church, 315 Security Boulevard. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be given to Goodwill, Special Olympics, or Faith Lutheran Church.
