Nena Lee (Marshall) Carter, beloved wife and mother of four, died
peacefully on September 19, 2024 in a Senior Living facility under
hospice care.
Nena was born on March 9, 1950 at the Navy Dispensary in Patuxent
River, St. Mary’s, Maryland to James Ignatz Marshall and Ruth (Noakes)
Marshall. Shortly thereafter her father was reassigned to Mare Island
Naval Shipyard in Vallejo California, where Nena graduated from
Richmond Union High School in 1968. It was there in History class that
she met her future husband Glen Carter. She attended Brigham Young
University before eloping on June 23, 1969 with her high school
sweetheart, and was married in the First Baptist Church of
Reno,Nevada. In the fall of 1969 Nena and Glen moved to Provo, Utah
where he attended Brigham Young University. It was here her first
child, Tina, was born on June 25, 1971. A second child, Brian,
followed on February 18, 1974. Glen graduated in May of 1974 with a
Bachelor’s degree in Electronics Technology.
After graduation Glen was commissioned a 2 nd Lieutenant in the USAF,
and they moved to Biloxi Mississippi. Shortly thereafter they moved to
Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City for his first assignment. It
was here on July 17, 1975 that her third child, Matthew, was born,
followed by her fourth child, Adam, on September 28, 1977. In 1980
they moved to Montgomery, Alabama for Glen’s assignment at Maxwell Air
Force Base Gunter Annex. Five years later they moved to the
Netherlands for an assignment at Allied Forces Central Europe
(AFCENT), NATO’s operational headquarters in command of Central
European forces. They lived in the quaint village of Amstenrade for
three years. This location helped Nena open up her family’s world with
memorable trips to historical places throughout Europe. In 1987 Glen
was reassigned to the Defense Communications Agency (DCA) headquarters
in Washington D.C. where Nena continued to share her love of history
through trips to notable sites throughout D.C., Virginia, and
Maryland. They moved to Falcon AFB in Colorado Springs, Colorado in
1991 for Glen’s final Space Command assignment.
After a 20-year career in USAF Glen retired on July 1, 1994, settling
in the Colorado Springs area.
Nena shared her passion for music as an accomplished violinist,
professional vocalist, and choir director; all the more impressive
considering her skills were self-taught. Her favorite pastimes were
reading, singing, sewing, playing the piano and violin, history, and
listening to her father’s Czechoslovakia button accordion music. She
devoted her life to her loved ones as a stay-at-home mom, later
supporting the family as a professional seamstress and receptionist at
a local veterinary clinic. She was a devout member of The Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, where she blessed members with her
musical talents.
Nena is survived by many who will miss her dearly, including her
husband of 55 years Glen, her daughter and spouse Tina Clark Armstrong
and Russell Armstrong, her three sons and their spouses Brian and Anne
Carter, Matthew and Kelsie Carter, and Adam Carter, as well as her
grandchildren James Clark, KC Lylark, Jessica Clark, Trenton Fry, Avie
Carter, Zeph (Zephaniah) Carter, and great-granddaughter Maya
Murillo-Clark.
Nena will be inurned with a private ceremony at the Pikes Peak
National Cemetery in Colorado Springs, Colorado. We feel her absence
but will always carry her memory in our hearts.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in her name to
your favorite charity.
