Anne Sherman Traver, 98, passed away on June 1, 2024. Anne (Annie) was born March 9th, 1926 in Denver Colorado to Elizabeth Melrose and Valentine Chase Sherman of Minnesota.
Anne lived in Denver with her family, including two sisters, Dale and Mary, until she was nine. Her family moved to Washington D.C. for her father’s position as a lobbyist for The National Dairy Federation.
Living in D.C., Anne thrived and pursued her passions for art and dance. She returned to Colorado to study art at Colorado College in Colorado Springs.
After her studies, Anne returned to Washington D.C. where she started her career in fashion as a buyer for the high-end department store, Garfinkles. Anne, a talented dancer, was a ballroom dance instructor for Aurther Murray. She even had the occasion to enter a Miss American Beauty Pageant. One spring, she was photographed for the Washington Times-Herald posing with the cherry blossoms “making them even more beautiful”.
With her first marriage to a General Motors car designer, Anne started a family in Birmingham, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit. In Michigan, Anne raised her family while always involved in many activities with her church and within the community. She was an excellent seamstress and designed and made clothing for her three daughters. Her designs were often featured in the lifestyle section of the local news. Always dancing, she choregraphed numbers for the community theater and participated in international folk-dance festivals.
With her children grown, Anne returned to her beloved mountains in Colorado Springs. This was her home for the next forty years. In the Springs she launched a dancing ensemble called the Cavalcade Dancers, who performed in many Colorado parades and events. She hosted a radio show called “Ask Your Neighbor” and once again taught ballroom dancing. Anne was an active member of the Colorado Cowboys for Jesus Church in Colorado Springs where she loved playing the “washboard” with the Cowboy Band!
Anne is survived by her five children: William (Susan), Robin (Glen), Amy, Kimberley, James (Lisa), her sister Mary, 13 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
Anne will be remembered for her creative and enthusiastic spirit! She will always remain in our hearts and she would tell you to “Keep on dancing!”
A memorial will be held at a later date.
