Mary Dowdell Smith died at her home on October 13, 2023 in Colorado Springs, CO at the age of 69.  Mary is survived by her sister Coyla Dowdell, nephew Karl Wayne Kutschan and Carla, cousins Dee Dee Trosclair and Steve ,  Lisa Kennedy, Dianne and Tim Lafoy, Melvin Roland and Ruby and various family members.

Mary lived with her sister in Colorado Springs the last 2 ½ years.  She was happy, outgoing and loved to chat with friends and family, especially over a meal.  She was very social and never knew a stranger.  Mary had a wonderful sense of humor.  She told friends stories that would make you laugh and say WOW.  She loved her dogs and cats.  When she lived on Airport Road, she adopted stray animals.  Mary always would load all the animals in her truck and take them to get their yearly shots.

Mary had lifelong friends in Louisiana.  Many friends were from school and work around Crowley, LA.  She loved getting together with her friends and they never grew apart.  Mary loved to use her iPhone to stay in contact with friends and family.  She lived such a “Cajun” way of life.  She celebrated all holidays in a joyful way.  Her early years were filled with small adventures; she was a spunky girl!   Mary told her sister that she did not regret anything she did.  She loved her life.

Mary’s last employment was at the Wood Group in Lafayette, LA.  She loved her payroll position within the company.  She was able to talk with folks all over the world because she was able to create their payroll deposit.

A huge thank you to the staff of Pikes Peak Hospice and Palliative Care, Interim Healthcare and especially Dr Racheal Degurse.  Mary felt safe with these services and was very satisfied with the care.

A Celebration of Life will be in Louisiana at a restaurant within a couple of months.  In honor of Mary, please contribute to your own Humane Society or to your favorite animal rescue.
