With heavy hearts, we share the news of Stephen Frank Alltop’s passing on May 4, 2023, at his

cherished home in Peyton, CO. He departed this world surrounded by his loving mother, Marlene

Alltop, his devoted wife, Marilu Alltop, and their beloved children, Stephen, Joshua, Audrey and

her Husband, Robert.

Steve’s extraordinary life, marked by unwavering commitment to his nation, cherished

loved ones, and fulfilling endeavors, commenced on April 10, 1959, in the loving embrace of

Jerry and Marlene Alltop, in the quaint town of Geneseo, IL. Growing up, he shared countless

treasured moments with his two older brothers, Tom and Dan, alongside a close-knit community

of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

Steve’s journey brought him to the United States Air Force Academy where he graduated

in 1981. There, he encountered his soulmate and partner of 43 years, Marilu (Mouirguies)

Alltop. Embarking on a remarkable military career spanning 24 years, Steve’s unwavering

commitment and exceptional piloting skills earned him numerous distinguished roles. As an

aircraft commander, mission commander, instructor pilot, and chief pilot instructor, he

exemplified bravery and dedication, completing 40 combat missions during Operation Desert

Storm. Rising to positions of great responsibility, he served as the Deputy Under-secretary of the

Air Force for International Affairs and commanded a flying training squadron. Notably, his

directorship in the Air Force Space Command’s Space Warfare Center showcased his expertise in

aerospace and space warfare.

Transitioning from the United States Air Force, Steve seamlessly embraced the corporate

world, leaving an indelible mark within government services. His project management support

for the Air Force Tactical Exploitation of National Capabilities (TENCAP) unit and leadership in

cyberspace studies and analysis attested to his continued excellence. In 2013, he embarked on a

path of training and mentoring, specifically in leadership development. Together with his

childhood friend and fellow USAF retiree Bob Mason, Steve co-founded The Daedalus Group LLC

in 2014. Their shared vision aimed to bring unparalleled leadership training to companies

worldwide, leaving a lasting impact in the field.

During the autumn of 2018, Steve’s talents led him to Blue Line Engineering, where he

utilized his project management and leadership acumen to address a critical challenge

threatening the company’s future. His exceptional success within the team resulted in his

appointment as an executive leader. Steve cherished the team, the company, and the abundant

opportunities before him, remaining a dedicated member until his final moments.

Steve’s life was not purely defined by his professional achievements but also by his

passion for the hobbies that brought him immense joy and relaxation. A primary source of

boundless joy resided in the realm of powered paragliding. The thrill of early morning flights, the

simplistic airborne solitude, awakened his spirit and invigorated his soul. It was during these

exhilarating flights that he found kinship with fellow enthusiasts, forging friendships and sharing

stories of the open skies. Powered paragliding was much more than a hobby; it was an

expression of his freedom and a testament to his adventurous spirit.

Complimentary to his skybound spirit, He also found solace in the beauty of nature,

embarking on camping adventures with his adored wife, Marilu, and their loyal canine

companions, Katy, Molly, and Precious. Together, they made many heartfelt memories during

their adventures. Breckenridge, CO held a special place in Steve’s heart, as their go-to retreat,

where he also enjoyed many seasons skiing. The picturesque mountain town provided respite,

allowing them to savor the comforts of home amidst awe-inspiring mountain vistas.

A man of unwavering principles and resolute adherence to his morals, Steve was an

outstanding role model and trusted advisor to all fortunate enough to know him. His integrity

and strong values shone as guiding lights, inspiring others to follow in his footsteps.

Steve Frank Alltop will forever remain in our hearts as a devoted husband to Marilu, a

loving father to Stephen, Joshua, and Audrey, and a doting grandfather to Aurora, Bailey, Grant,

and Emma. His absence will be deeply felt by his mother, Marlene, brother, Dan, and all those

who had the privilege of knowing him.

Steve was preceded in death by his father, Jerry Alltop, and his Oldest brother, Tom

Alltop.

In Steve’s own words, “Success is not just about achieving goals; it is about the journey

you take to get there.” Steve’s journey was one of excellence, dedication, and unwavering

commitment to his country, his family, and his work. His legacy will continue to inspire us all.

High Flight

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth

And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;

Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth

of sun-split clouds,—and done a hundred things

You have not dreamed of—wheeled and soared and swung

High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there,

I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung

My eager craft through footless halls of air ….

Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue

I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace

Where never lark nor ever eagle flew—

And, while with silent lifting mind I’ve trod

The high untrespassed sanctity of space,

Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.
