James Horton Cooke, 82, was the son of Dolly Agnes Horton and James Vinston Cooke. He was born April 26th, 1940 in Fort Worth, Texas. He died Saturday, January 21, 2023 in Colorado Springs, Co of renal failure.

Jim earned his B. S. in Physics from NTSC (now the University of North Texas) in 1962. He received his PhD from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in 1966. He retired with tenure as a Physics professor in 1979 at The University of Texas at Arlington. In his later years he taught at St. John’s College (Santa Fe, NM), Santa Fe Community College and the University of New Mexico, Los Alamos. He was an excellent teacher, often supplementing his instruction with home-built devices to illustrate a concept. His best-known theoretical research paper was on time delays in gravitational lensing.

He is survived by his wife, Rene Holaday, daughter June Cooke, son Thomas Holaday, his niece Amy Teichman, sister-in-law, Dr. Lisa Holaday and nephew Leo, and sister-in-law Andria Knight Holaday and nephew Joseph.

There will be a Remembrance of Life Reception on February 18 at The University of Texas at Arlington Planetarium, Room 303, from 1-3p.
