Jay Scott Vickerman, 80, of Colorado Springs passed away peacefully Saturday July 16, 2022.

Jay was born on October 24, 1941 in Colorado Springs, Colorado to Samuel and Mary Vickerman. He graduated from Colorado Springs High School (now Palmer High School) in 1959. He was involved in ROTC and obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in Social Studies and English from Colorado College in 1963. He graduated as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army where he served 2 years. Jay was honorably discharged from the Army and he continued his education by obtaining his Master’s Degree in Library Science and Media Technology from San Jose State University in 1970. Jay returned home to Colorado Springs with a wife and baby in the late Summer of 1970 so he could continue his teaching career through District 11. He was employed by District 11 for 31 years as a Middle School Teacher. Jay loved teaching America’s youth, but his true love was for America’s Mountain, Pikes Peak. Jay worked as a Pikes Peak Ranger on Pikes Peak for 38 years. He worked every Summer, over holiday breaks, and even some weekends serving visitors from all over the World. Jay was his happiest when he was on Pikes Peak in the fresh mountain air helping others. He even jokingly renamed Pikes Peak to “Jay’s Mountain”. Jay also test drove cars for GM for many years as well. Jay loved to take road trips and go to Gemstone and Mineral Shows throughout the country. He was a true Rock Hound and loved learning about and collecting specimens from all over the World.

Jay is survived by two daughters Laurie Thompson and Susan Vickerman-McKitrick both of Colorado Springs. He is also survived by two grand children Jeremy Vickerman-McKitrick and Lindsay McKitrick. Jay was a devoted Son, Soldier, Husband, Father, Teacher, Ranger and Friend. He strived to help others and he loved to make people laugh. He will be greatly missed, especially for his sense of Humor.
