Gordon James Mayo Jr. passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home on Nov. 25th, 2020. He was 90 years old.
Gordon was born in Cadillac, MI on Dec. 15, 1929 to Gordon and Sarah (Nixon) Mayo. After graduating from Cadillac High School in 1947, he began working for Associated Trucking Company. Later he transferred to Parker Motor Freight as a Terminal Manager until 1972.
Gordon and Delores P. (Barnes) were married Jan. 27th, 1951. The couple lived in Boon, MI until 1968, then later moved to Traverse City, MI with their 5 children, Debra Kae, Diana Yvonne, Donna Louise, James Hugh, and John David.
After visiting Colorado, Gordon fell in love with the area and later moved his family to Colorado in 1973. Gordon worked at the Colorado Springs Transit as a city bus mechanic until he retired in 1992.
Being a member of the hiking club, Friends on Foot, he loved the outdoors, hiking in the Rocky Mountains where he hiked the entire Colorado Trail and the Havasupai Falls Trail in the Grand Canyon. So many trails and so little time.
He was also a member of Colorado Springs Astronomical Society and attended the The Rocky Mountain Star Stare on several occasions, as he loved astronomy. Many other hobbies enjoyed were bowling until he was 89, beautiful woodworking, reading science magazines, watching Star Trek and Star Wars plus he had a love of music to include blues, jazz, and folk music.
Gordon is survived by his wife, Delores (Barnes) Mayo, his sister Claudia (Terry) Rosbeck of Alpena, MI and his five children, Debra Kae (Stephen) Johnson of Webster, FL; Diana Yvonne (Mark) Ankner of Hubbard Lake, MI; Donna Louise (David) Loberg of Florissant, CO; James Hughe of Colorado Springs, CO; John David (Jackie) of Viborg, SD. 7 grandchildren- Thomas (Tina) Sorensen; Marc (Diana) Glauch; Kyle (Melissa) Loberg; Jannell (Chad) Douglas; Kelly Mayo and Joshua Mayo, 19 great-grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren plus many more nieces and nephews.
Gordon will be missed greatly by many who loved him. There are no memorial services planned at this time but a family gathering is being planned at a later date.
