1925 ~ 2017
Richard (Dick) Short was born May 24, 1925 to Ray & Minnie (Reynolds) Short in Diagonal, Iowa and was raised on the family farm. He attended schools in Shannon City, Iowa. After high school he joined the US Army and served during WWII in Japan. After his time in the Army, he returned to Creston, Iowa, married & had a son Michael, and began working as an electrical lineman. He moved to Colorado Springs in 1955 and worked for the City of Colorado Springs Utilities. He retired from COS Utilities in 1980 as General Foreman for the overhead electrical division. He sold electrical supplies for many years and then had his most fun job, one of the first hosts in the dining rooms of McDonald restaurants, where he loved meeting and visiting with people for 20 years.
He married Rebecca (Becky) Terry in 1981. They had one daughter, Courtney, who became his constant companion. He loved being involved in their daughter’s school activities, helping in the classrooms and sports activities.
He spent his years serving others by being involved in activities at Redeemer Lutheran Church & School and Holy Cross Lutheran Church. Several of his proudest accomplishments were being a part of remodeling the sanctuary of Redeemer and being on the “ground floor” establishing the food pantry & Christ Care Ministry at Holy Cross.
He is survived by his wife Becky, daughter Courtney of Colorado Springs, son Mike & wife LaDonna of Creston, Iowa, Granddaughter Lisa Tomas, Great Grandchildren Kessler, Kolby, & Kenna Tomas of Creston Iowa, sisters Pauline Meeker of South Carolina, & Elma (Fred) Stickel of Colorado Springs, and many nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, former wife Marilyn Boyd, wife Billie Kuykendall, sisters Edna Vorhies & Veva Vorhies.
Memorial service will be held on December 21, 2017 at 11:30 at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Colorado Springs.
